What's Your Advice?

The purpose of this blog is to turn the Shabbat table into a roundtable... Please print and share...
Here's your countdown to Shavuot
Dedicated to Devorah bat Chava - May she have a speedy and complete recovery.

Desk exerciser
Last week, Israeli media reported that 55 percent of Israelis gained significant weight during their lockdown.

Note that they only surveyed people who (in normal times) exercise regularly.

First question for your table: Is this a big deal?

Hear in America, yesterday two people told me opposite things about their own current exercise experience.

Person 1 - "I'm having trouble exercising. I know I should be doing it, but just not getting into it."

Person 2 - "My wife and I, who don't normally exercise, have been doing a 15-minute exercise routine together every evening."

Questions for your table:

What would you say to Person 1?
What would you say to Person 2?

Sizing Things Up....

The purpose of this blog is to macro-manage the Shabbat table conversation... Please print and share...
Here's your countdown to Shavuot

Do you remember last week's teenager's dream that became a reality?

As you can see, we indeed inaugurated it this week on
Lag B'Omer.

It's small for a bonfire, but sometimes smaller is more impactful.

Let's put this in the form of corona trivia questions for your Shabbat table:

1. How big (or should I say small) is this virus? What's the actual size? [roughly 100 nanometers]
2. What does "nano" mean? [billionth — 1/1,000,000,000]
(not to be confused with "micro" which means millionth)
3. How do you write that in decimal? [
0.000000001]
4. How big is that in millimeters? [one one-millionth — 1/1,000,000]
5. How do you write that in decimal? [
0.000001
]
(Bonus question - why does the fraction version have one more zero than the decimal?)
7. So how big is the virus in millimeters? [1 ten-thousandth of a mm]
8. How many could you fit on the tip of an average human hair? [about 30,000] (as far as I can tell, I'm a bit rusty at packing problems)
9. How does that compare to bacteria? [a lot smaller!]

10. Final Q for your table: Is there a deeper lesson to the fact that such a tiny thing could up-end the entire world?

Going In Circles?

The purpose of this blog is to sprout some self-expression at the Shabbat table... Please print and share...
Here's your countdown to Shavuot. (Rather count up? Click here.)

I hope you enjoyed last week's humorous images.

(And thank you to those who replied with your gardening expertise!)

What you're looking at today is the realization of a teenagers dream.

To build his very own fire pit.

He talked about it for months. Maybe for years.

He was taken to Home Hardware more than once to examine and measure various stones.

But one wondered if it would ever be.

I asked him, What motivated you this week to finally do it?
His answer: "Now that I have more time, it seemed like an even better idea and project. Also, this summer, I want to have more friends over and it'll be fun and great to have a fire pit."

So nothing to do with Lag B'Omer coming next week - but great timing!

Question for your table: What have you dreamed about, talked about, planned, but not executed - not because you are not able, just because?

Shabbat Shalom

Happy Mother's Day

and

Happy Lag B'Omer

Sargent Peppers Saga

First question for your table - what do you do to protect your young ones from the cold outside? Do you keep them inside? Do you bundle them up? Do you not worry about it?

This week I thought I could say that spring is finally here.

Yes, the trees began blooming weeks ago, and yes, Pesach always comes in the spring.

But its hard to feel like its spring when it's still too cold to plant your garden.

I've never been a consistent gardener: the peas one year are hardy, the next year meager, the carrots can range from stubby to awesome, the corn ranges from not sprouting at all to 4-H quality. About the only thing I can count on are the cherry tomatoes.

But this year I had a new idea. Before Pesach when the pandemic's curve was steepening and the lockdowns were growing: giant bell peppers!

Of course, it was too early to plant them then - the experts say to wait until temperatures stop dipping below 50.

The wait is over, this week they went from indoor starter-pots to the ground (with a lot of help from our son Avramy).

But now the NWS is telling us that our friends up north are sending us more cold air next week. What to do, what to do? Any suggestions from your table?

Another question for your table - The Pandemic can make us feel like seedlings stuck in the ground, unable to run away when the weather turns uncomfortable, completely dependent on someone else for our survival.

But it also give you an opportunity to express yourself?
