Inflammatory

The goal of this blog is to turn extrospection into introspection at your Shabbat table.... please print and share.

Joseph's Tomb in FlamesThe image to the left is Joseph's Tomb, set ablaze by a mob last night.

Here is a little background.

In 1867, Mark Twain wrote:

"
About a mile and a half from Shechem we halted at the base of Mount Ebal before a little square area, inclosed by a high stone wall, neatly whitewashed. Across one end of this inclosure is a tomb…. It is the tomb of Joseph. No truth is better authenticated than this....Few tombs on earth command the veneration of so many races and men of diverse creeds as that of Joseph. Samaritan and Jew, and Christian alike, revere it, and honour it with their visits. The tomb of Joseph, the dutiful son, the affectionate, forgiving brother, the virtuous man, the wise Prince and ruler. Egypt felt his influence--the world knows his history."

For Allasake, there is an entire sura in the Koran devoted to him (#12: "Joseph - Peace Be Upon Him").

So how has it come to this?

There are so many answers!

1. The Moslem preacher's answer:

2. The US government's answer:
Mr. Obama's true feelings.
Mr. Obama's "clarified" feelings.

3. The Stanford professor's answer:

5. Hadassah Hospital's answer:

6. The New York Times' answer (and a YU professor's critique of it):

7. The European press's answer:

Two weeks ago the question was, "When does life begin?" Last week the answer was: Now and the question was, How?

This week the question for your table is
8. What's the Jewish answer?

Shabbat Shalom

J'Accuse...!

For an English translation, click here.
J'Accuse...!

King:
Quand les gens critiquent les sionistes, ils signifient Juifs. Vous parlez de l'antisémitisme!

Pensez-y.

Et puis, l'action.

Et dans l'intervalle,

Shabbat Shalom (un bon week-end).

Dahlia's Hand

In memory of Dalia Lemkus and Almog Shiloni, murdered this week because they were Jews who dared living in the Land of Israel.
The goal of this blog is to bring a bit of contemplation to your Friday night dinner table. Please print and share.

Dalia headshot 2According to accounts, Dalia Lemkus was a normal young woman.

When she was murdered this week, she was hitchhiking to her volunteer job at Yad Sarah.

Yad Sarah means "Sarah's Hand". The name is a nod to the great Matriarch who ran (with her husband Avraham) an enormous free hospitality enterprise some 3,700 years ago.

Incidentally, in the vicinity of Dahlia's home.

(And, ironically, in the vicinity of the murderer, who murdered in order to market the idea that his people are the more authentic heirs to the legacy of Abraham. How do you say "confused" in Arabic again?)

Yad Sarah is one of the biggest charity organizations in the Land of Israel. They serve without discrimination Jews, Arabs, Druze, Christians - namely everyone. With 6,000 volunteers and only 150 paid staff, they lend for free over 244,000 pieces of medical equipment every year.

Someone broke their leg and needs crutches? Call Yad Sarah.
Need a wheel chair? Call Yad Sarah.
How about an oxygen concentrator, apnea monitor, infant scale, hospital bed, shower chair, high-tech or assistive device? Call Yad Sarah.

Someone in a wheelchair needs a ride to a medical appointment? Call Yad Sarah.
Someone needs to make a decision on medical devices, needs advice, needs training? Call Yad Sarah.

And this is only a partial list! Learn about the extent of their services here.

Even tourists enjoy the free services of Yad Sarah.

(Yad Sarah's entire $23 million budget comes from private donations. Their main website is here; their American site is here.)

This background tells us a lot about Miss Lemkus. But there's more.

She was just completing her training as an occupational therapist.

She spoke English with a South African accent, thanks to her parents who made aliyah thirty years ago.

When she went to synagogue on Shabbat she made a point to smile at everyone in her row before anything else.

She was sought after by brides to do their makeup on wedding day because she loved doing that chesed and was good at it

When Yad Sarah needed a volunteer to cover the evening shift, what would they do? Call Dahlia.

We know where she got it from. Her father, an optometrist, serves as a volunteer ambulance driver. Her mother, an international sales rep, cares for the elderly. When her brother Chaggai celebrated his bar mitzvah a month ago, guess who cooked all the food?

When a neighbor had to go to the hospital with a sick child, guess who stayed with the other young children all night and refused to be paid?

In other words, she was a normal Jewish girl from a normal Jewish family.

Right?

She couldn't afford a car, so she had to hitchhike: to get to her job in a Kiryat Gat kindergarten and to her volunteer work at Yad Sarah.

attack sceneShe was murdered at the bus stop / hitchhiking post of Alon Shevut.

The town stands on the site of the Battle of Beit Zechariah, fought between the Maccabees and the Seleucid army after the defeat of the Seleucids in Jerusalem.

That modern road is in fact an ancient road to Jerusalem, still marked by Roman milestones. Many ancient mikvaot have been found in the surrounding hills, presumably used by pilgrims heading up to Jerusalem.

Dahlia was trying to head up that road when she was brutally run over then stabbed. Oh, I forgot to mention that she survived a knife attack at that exact spot in 2006. I guess she didn't get the message then.

The murderer first tried to run her over with his Subaru minivan. When he saw that she was still writhing with life, he jumped out and stabbed her in the neck, over and again. Two others were wounded before the murderer was immobilized by a security guard.

“Dalia! Dalia!” wailed her mother as her daughter was lowered into her final resting place.

Her uncle described her as "the angel of our family."

This week's questions for your table:

1. Do you agree with me that Dalia was a "normal Jewish girl from a normal Jewish family"?
2. Did Dalia live a full life?

Shabbat Shalom

Your Brother’s Blood

In memory of Rabbi Gabriel and Rivka Holtzberg and all the other victims.

Please print this message and read/share at your Friday night dinner table.

November 27th, 2008 (Ynet News): The two-year-old son of Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg and his wife Rivka is asking about the whereabouts of his parents, his nanny told Ynet. The nanny, Sandra Samuel, is a local who had been living with the family. She and the toddler are currently staying in the Israeli Consulate in Mumbai. “The baby is okay, but I have no idea about the couple. Nobody told us anything,” she said. “In the evening his mother always puts him to sleep and now he doesn’t understand what’s going on,” she added.

I’m very sad. I did not know the Hotlzbergs, yet I knew them intimately.

I am them. Like the Holtzbergs, my wife and I, too, left our comfort zone to go to the high tech capital on the West Coast, in order to do a little Jewish outreach.

OK, so they chose Mumbai and we chose Silicon Valley, but believe me I can relate to them. I know many Chabad emissaries (several of whom knew the Holtzbergs) and they are as a rule the most giving, loving, selfless and hardworking people you will ever meet. When they move to a community, they are committed forever to that community (unlike yours, truly, who relocated to Baltimore). Contrary to popular myth, they don’t enjoy long-term support from some golden Chabad bankroll. They quickly have to support themselves. I know several who moonlight in other jobs just to pay the bills. Abandoning their mission due to hardship is not an option, not because they took an oath but because they care.

Now, my style of teaching Judaism is slightly different than some Chabad rabbis. Some will tell you, “Just put on the tefillin, it’s good for you, even if you don’t understand it, it’s a mitzvah.”

I will tell you, “You want to learn about tefillin? So come and learn. Whether or not you put it on is your business.”

You may prefer one style over the other. Different strokes for different folks.

But make no mistake: the terrorists did not choose the Chabad House of Mumbai randomly. It was a premeditated attack on Mumbai’s most visibly Jewish target. Unlike all the other victims of this tragedy, the Holtzbergs and their guests were not killed because they represented international business or because they happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. They were killed because they were Jews.

This week’s question for your table is: what does that simple fact mean to you?

In other words, do you agree with this news analysis:

For a change, I’m going to put on my Chasidic hat and ask you outright to do a mitzvah, even if you haven’t learned about it.

Please, tonight, 18 minutes before sunset, light Shabbat candles. If you light them anyway and know someone who doesn’t, phone them up and encourage them to – just this one time.

In memory of those who lost their lives, in honor of those who need healing, and in solidarity with the frontline soldiers of Chabad worldwide.

Time to light Nov 28:
Los Angeles: 4:26
New York: 4:12
San Francisco: 4:34
Seattle: 4:03

Slipping and Sliding

Dedicated to Chaya bas Yehudis, may she have a speedy recovery from her recent surgery.
To the full speedy recovery of Koroush Eliezer Chaim ben Leah.
In memory of Daniel Levian.
In memory of Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev.
To dedicate a future Table Talk, send an email.

On Sunday I watched the kids enjoy an amazing toy that I never had as a kid.

Not a computer.

Not even electronic.

Not mechanical.

No rules or regulations.

It’s a long sheet of plastic with pin-holes down one side and that connects to a hose, creating a wet and slippery runway to race down again and again – a “Slip-and-Slide”.

You've never seen so much sustained glee.

Summertime. Who needs gadgets?

+++ end of the family section. +++

Summertime.

“Sami Kuntar was involved in the death of several Israelis.” - BBC News, broadcast worldwide Wednesday night this week.

Involved?? What kind of involvement, O dear BBC?

In the words of Zeev Bielski, Chairman of the Jewish Agency for Israel, Samir Kuntar is “one of the most evil and abominable killers in the history of Islamic terror”.

On April 21, 1979, Kuntar headed a terrorist unit of the “Palestinian Liberation Front” which reached the shores of Naharya in a rubber boat, shot at a police patrol and killed an Israeli policeman. In the middle of the night, the unit broke into the home of the Haran family and took hostage Danny, the father of the family, and Einat his four-year old daughter while Smadar, Danny’s wife, her two-year old daughter Yael and a neighbor hid in a hiding place in the family bedroom. The terrorists took Danny and Einat to the shore. When they encountered IDF and police forces there, Samir Kuntar shot Danny at short range and smashed Einat’s head with the butt of his rifle against a rock. In the hiding place of the Haran family, baby Yael suffocated to death as her mother, Smadar, attempted to stifle her cries in order to prevent being discovered by the terrorists. Another Israeli policeman died in the course of the fighting on the beach.

Here is a recent article by Smadar (the surviving wife/mother).

This is the man whom the State of Israel freed today. A hero in the eyes of Lebanon. We witnessed the hero's welcome this man received in Beirut - not only from Hizbollah, but from the country's elected leadership, with fireworks and joyous speeches, who promised his people that he will return to Israel to continue his mission.

That's what the BBC means by "involved".

I will tell you the truth - all of these war drums and battle cries, and the consistent dishonest maligning of Israel by the BBC, NPR, CBC, inter alia, is distracting us from the real truth.

The real truth is that when they kidnapped those 2 soldiers 2 years ago, Hizbollah immediately called for the release of Smadar and friends in a swap. His release was always their aim.

Question for your table - how does this story make you feel?

Personally, it makes me feel three things:

1. We are alone
2. We'd better stick together.
3. We are our own worst enemy

I don't recall a time since coming to Baltimore when there were so many people sitting shiva. This is heavy times.

If you are enjoying your summer - and I hope you are - remember for a minute your cousins in Israel and elsewhere who are in anguish.

Question #2 - It's easy to have 20-20 hindsight, but let's be truthful - if you had been in the driver's seat, would you have released Kuntar?

Here's an article that provides one perspective of the facts and repercussions of this story.

And here are the only heroes of this story:
